This song is just one example of the many Union parodies of "Dixie." Although Irwin Silber, writing in Songs of the Civil War, identifies it as one of the better attempts, he also points out that it was no more popular than any of the others and did not, as the many skillful lyricists who tried their hand at it had hoped, reclaim Northerner Emmett's song for the Union.
