This poem was written upon the death of Amos M. Travis, a resident of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who served in Company E, 30th New York, and was mortally wounded at Antietam along with his captain, Harrison Holliday, a prominent citizen of Poughkeepsie. The verses were sung at Travis's funeral.

Thanks to Joel Craig of the Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry, Company A, for contributing this poem.
