According to War Poets of the South and Confederate Camp-Fire Songs (compiled by Georgian Charles W. Hubner, date unknown), from which this poem was taken, James R. Barrick was born in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1829 and served at one point in the Kentucky legislature. During the War years, he lived in Macon, Georgia and, along with Harry Flash, was editor of the Macon Telegraph. He eventually relocated to Atlanta and continued his literary pursuits, writing several patriotic war poems. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery.
