This poem appeared in the Poughkeepsie Eagle on May 25, 1863, accompanied by the following note:
In memory of John B. Cypher of the 128th NY who died of disease on Dec. 18, 1862 at Quarantine Station, La. Cypher's commander, Capt. Wilkinson said of his death - "A soldier's death may be as heroic in the hospital as on the battlefield"
