Written by a Kentuckian about whom little is known other than her name and the year of her birth, this poem appeared in War Poetry of the South, compiled and edited by Southern poet William Gilmore Simms and published in 1867. Although there were other poems about mortally wounded enemies who discover, in the hour of death, more to unite than to divide them, perhaps none is as touching as this one of Miss Leonard's.
